One of our family’s favorite activities to spread happiness during the holiday season is shopping for toys for the Marine’s Toys for Tots program.
We have four boys, and although they’re big boys now, the perpetual kid inside loves to pick out the toys they think other children would like. I’m in charge of the girly gifts and books, of course.
Then we load them into the trunk (the gifts, not the kids) and drop them off at one of the fire stations in our neighborhood. The fire fighters are always excited to see gifts come in, too. Find drop-off places here: http://www.toysfortots.org/
Even in my meager student days, I used to set aside money to do this–and shopped thrift stores or garage sales–because there’s always a child dreaming of being appreciated somewhere.
So this weekend, we’re going out to spread happiness. If you want to help, plan to donate early, because the toys have to be picked up, sorted, and distributed before Christmas. And this year, they’re especially in need.
Finally, here’s another blog positing by fellow author Patrick Jones that touched my heart, too: http://www.thelindenchronicles.com/toys-for-tots/?fb_source=pubv1
Thanks to all of our Marines involved in Toy for Tots. And to all of you: Semper Fidelis.
